Is my Chihuahua's diarrhea after surgery a pain med side effect?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Long Coat) | Male | unneutered | 9 years and 7 months old | 6.39 lbs

My Chi had teeth cleaning and at the same time a small pink lump on his neck removed on the 3th. Last night he started to have diarrhea. Today we called the vet and she said it might be for the pain killers (meloxoxikam) We gave him promax this afternoon and while his stool were more normal right after, he has diarrhea right now. Do you think it's a simple reaction to the meds? Tomorrow morninf I will call the vet. But I would love to talk to one now

Meloxicam can cause diarrhea as a side effect, so I do think this could be the cause of Jacob’s diarrhea. I’d give him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. If this helps, then slowly add back in his normal diet. Giving his vet a call in the morning is a good idea. I hope this helps!
