My dog has bladder problems after a cortisone shot. How long?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 11 years and 9 months old | 78 lbs

We took our dog in for a foot problem and the vet gave her a big dose of cortisone. Now she's having problems controlling her bladder. They said if it has not stopped in 3 to 4 weeks to bring her back. Should it take that long for her to regain control and will she regain control. It's the first time she's ever had that shot. She about 13 years of age. I'm so very worried about my dog. Please help me with some answers. Thanks so much. Bless you.

Steroid shots effects can last three to four weeks, which is why your vet said this will likely continue for that amount of time. Typically dogs do regain control of their bladder after this, but without seeing Maryjane in person, I can't say for certain. Continue to monitor her, and if she is still having bladder problems after this time passes, then take her back into the vet. I hope this helps!
