My cat's licking a wound. Can I use dog cream or Germi-Stat on it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 3 lbs

My cat has a wound about 1/2 inch in diameter. It doesn't look infected but she is licking it a lot. We have a cone we can put on her, but I need to know if we can use Viaderm-K.C. Cream on it which we have left over from our now deceased dog. Also can we use Germi-Stat Gel 4%? We will take her to the vet at any sign of infection, or if not healing.

Willow is gorgeous! No, I would not use any cream left over from another pet. In addition, although quite safe on superficial wounds, cats groom and ingest most of the topical ointment you apply and therefore should be used only under direct veterinary supervision and if there are no other appropriate options. Many human ointments contain multiple other ingredients which are not necessarily safe to be swallowed. Best of luck.
