My cat is very thirsty and peeing a lot. What vet tests are best?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Bombay | Female | spayed | 12 years and 11 months old | 9 lbs

I'm taking my cat Mercy to the vet next week for a wellness/precautionary checkup. I've noticed that she's been drinking more water lately and is always extremely thirsty in the morning. She drinks about 8oz of water a day. Is that too much? I've also noticed some slight twitching around her face, but only when she's resting. Also a slight increase in urination. So my question is, what would be more helpful, a urinalysis or a blood test? And what type of blood test? Thank you for your advice.

Increased thirst and urination can be commom symptoms of many disease processes and you are right that the first things we check for are metabolic (kidney disease, diabetes, etc.). The answer to your question is both. A urinalysis should always be performed as part of a blood panel, otherwise you are missing crucial information. Your vet will likely order a senior kitty wellness panel from an outside lab which will include cbc, chemistry panel, thyroid testing, and urinalysis. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
