Is bile duct cancer hereditary in dogs? Is my Yorkie's sister at risk?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 8 years and 9 months old | 12 lbs

My Yorkshire terrier (8 yr old male) died yesterday of bile duct carcinoma just about 1 hour after diagnosis. He has a sister from the same litter that has lived with him her entire life. What are the chances she may also have this happen as I read it could be caused by environment or parasites.

Bile duct carcinoma is not particularly common in dogs, and although there may be a hereditary component it is also very possible that Bark's sister will not be affected. Because it is not a common cancer and we don't know exactly how it might be inherited it is impossible to say exactly how likely or unlikely it is. I'm so sorry you lost Bark so suddenly.
