My senior dog is vomiting with urine breath. Is it kidney failure?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 40 lbs

11 year-old dog who recently had ultrasound and bloodwork come back clear(after vomiting issues, 2 weeks ago), did round of antiobiotics. After 1-2 weeks doing well(1 vomit), she threw up both yesterday and this morning and her breath smelled like urine last night. Mood is fine, no diarrhea, urination normal. Has been eating bland chicken and rice or comparable dog food for a few weeks. Her appetite fine is fine. Wondering if this is long-term kidney failure?

Hello. Your blood work should have indicated if there were any kidney problems, so if nothing was said, I would rule this out. If she did well on antibiotics, but then regressed, she may need to stay on antibiotics longer. Some dogs remain on antibiotics for 6-8 weeks.
