Food/supplements for obese lab with joint, skin, and food allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 8 years and 3 months old | 128 lbs

I have an 8 yr old obese lab that is having a bit of trouble getting up after lying down & is gimpy for a bit afterward. I know the stiffness has a bit to do w/ his weight (125 lbs). But he also has TERRIBLE skin allergies that make him itch HORRIBLY! I believe he also has food allergies too... What large breed food/supplements (brand suggestions & formulas pls!) should I be giving him to help him lose weight, help his SEVERE skin & food allergies & his joint problems as he ages even further?

Hello. I would start with Hill's sensitive Skin & Stomach. It is not a light food, but by feeding the recommended amount on the bag for a 60-80 pound dog, he should begin to drop a little weight. For his joints, you want to give him a name brand supplement & I recommend Nutramax. They make Cosequin & Dasuquin Advanced. I would also start him on a fish oil supplement, 1000-2000 mg daily. As he ages, he may need more help with his arthritis & we have excellent pain modalities for dogs including appropriate non steroidal drugs, & prescription joint treatments called Adequan. You will discuss these with your vet. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
