My dog has red lumps on gums after chewing. What could it be?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I noticed recently that my dogs gums were red. He had just got done chewing on a big rawhide bone so I didn't think much about it at first. Upon closer inspection, I noticed two red "lumps/masses" on the bottom part of his mouth on each side of his gums. They are the same size and shape on the left and right side of his mouth. I Googled this and oral tumors came up. If it is oral tumors, what is the chances he has 2 identical tumors on each side of his mouth around same tooth? No other symptoms.

Dogs can get multiple oral tumors and they can also have a condition called ginigival hyperplasia. With your pup, it looks like the mass is starting to overgrow on the tooth. I recommend to have your pup examined by the veterinarian. If the doctor thinks this is gingival hyperplasia, there is a procedure to remove the excess gum tissue. This may need to repeat be repeated again in the future. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
