My dog licks strangers, won't bark. Can she become protective?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 30 days old | 29.542 lbs

She does not bark at any stranger, she just keeps licking every stranger's feet that comes into the house and then she wags her tail. I can't get her to bark at anyone or get her motivated to protect. I asked whom I got her from and he says that the dam which gave birth to her is the same. They tried everything but the dam would not bark at anything. We want to sell her off. Should we sell her or can she improve? We suspect being in the same house with the Rottweiler made her soft perhaps?

Temperament definitely has a strong genetic component, so if Kyra's mom was mellow, Kyra is more likely to be mellow. The dad's temperament also figures in as well. You're not going to get a complete look until she's closer to social maturity around 2 years of age. Being exposed to less people now may make her more suspicious of strangers in the future and she may bark more as he gets older, but it's hard to say. It might be worthwhile to explore finding a dog who's parents are more similar to what you're looking for.
