How to safely interact with a dog with giardia? What about daycare?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Female | spayed | 3 months and 4 days old | 25 lbs

If a dog has giardia does this mean they can’t lick you and you can’t touch them or just be careful with their feces until their treatment is done? Basically how should a dog owner with a dog that has giardia interact without infecting owner? Should the dog not go to doggy daycare until they are healed?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Mia. Giardia is spread through a fecal oral route. Typically good hygiene and washing your hands thoroughly prohibits this from occurring. I would not let her lick your mouth. Scoop the feces in the yard frequently and wash your hands afterwards. She should stay home from doggie daycare until the infection is resolved. I hope this information helps!
