Why does my cat have a bald, bloody spot on his neck? Is it ringworm?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Longhair | Male | neutered | 7 months and 18 days old | 10 lbs

My cat is a 8 month old male which I adopted him from a shelte, he started developing a bald spot behind his neck about a month ago and turned into a bloody patch . I just bought a Lime sulfur dip to treat him because for what I have researched it looks like ringworm. He is the only pet right now in the house I used to have a pet snake but she died about a week ago . So I’m really worried that might be something else please help

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Ringworm is definitely first on my list but a skin infection is also possible. Sulfur lime dip does work but most cats hate bathing and you have to do it once to twice weekly for 2-4 weeks in some cases. If you’re interested, your vet can prescribe a spray, mousse, etc that does not require bathing. Of course, don’t forget home decontamination (vacuuming and sweeping, washing bedding frequently in hot water). And finally, if YOU get any little itchy red spots anywhere, see your human doctor right away to get started on treatment. Bets wishes to you and Rocky.
