Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 6 years and 9 months old | 16 lbs

I took my dog to the vet today. He has kennel cough. She gave him antibiotics and steroids. I am treating him just of today. How long will it be till he is better? She didn't say. Also, what exactly is kennel cough? Why did he get it? He even got vaccinated against it.

Kennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease of dogs characterized by a severe honking cough. It is typically a self-limiting disease, with symptoms resolving in three to four weeks. Vaccines can prevent the spread of kennel cough, although it does not guarantee protection. This is because kennel cough is caused by so many different infectious agents. I hope this helps!
