Why is my dog's healed broken leg bending after plate removal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Saluki | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 8 months old | 20 lbs

Hello i have a 7 year old saluki x lurcher he was rescued from his last owner who tried to kill him resulting in a bad broken leg and a few other minor injuries thankfully he recovered and has been very well for a few years but when he first had his leg fixed they had a plate in his leg about 2 years later the plate started coming through his skin so he went back into surgery to have it removed the vet said he should be ok as the bone was fine but recently it seems to be bending more any help?

Hello, and thanks for your question about Furgle. If the fracture occurred 2 years ago, then your vet is right that he should do fine without the plate, since a fracture should completely heal within 2-3 months. If he doesn't seem painful, then I wouldn't be too worried. However, if you feel that there's definitely a change happening in the angle of his leg, then it's worth having your vet take another look. You're also welcome to post a picture and we can offer subjective input on the appearance of the photo. But, this doesn't sound likely to be related to his previous fracture. Hope this helps.
