Found a spot on my dog's itchy back. Is it skin cancer or allergies?

I just found this spot on my dogs back, I took three pictures of it. Is it early stage skin cancer? He does have very itchy skin that we are trying to heal up through new food and supplements, so he chews on his hind quarters but I’m not sure if he can reach this spot. I’m hoping it’s just him biting his skin. But he is a very light haired dog with thin hair who originally came from New Mexico, we got him when he was about two years old, he’s about five now.

Hello, sorry to hear about Pickles. It is likely an exacerbation of his skin allergies. Common skin cancers present with either a mass, a bleeding ulcer, and they typically are too excessively itchy. It would be more likely that this is just another sign of his itchy skin and he needs to be managed with his ongoing diet trial as well as anti-itch medications and antibiotics for secondary skin infections. If Pickles continues to have some itchiness, then speak with your veterinarian about obtaining anti-allergy medications such as Apoquel or Atopica. Hope this helps and best of luck.
