My dog just had puppies. Why is she shaking, panting, and not eating?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pyrenean Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 110 lbs

My Pyrenees gave birth to 9 late last night. She did extremely well during the birthing. Today she didn't want water and food. If you put her dry food in water she would take it. Tonight she is shaking and panting a lot. She had very foul smelling poop. She peed a lot in several locations. Should I be worried about the panting and shaking? What should I do? Its late here and I don't want to call me vet and wake her if this is normal.

Congrats on the puppies! Rosie could be shaking and panting due to the puppies nursing. When puppies nurse, it releases oxytocin which causes uterine contractions, which in turn leads to panting and shaking. Without seeing her in person, I can't say this for certain, but it could be normal. What isn't normal is that she doesn't want food or water. Keep giving her dry food in water since she will take it. She may have foul smelling poop if she ate the placentas. Monitor her tonight, and if she still isn't eating or drinking in the morning, take her and her puppies into the vet. I hope this helps!
