Thank you for using PetCoach. Dachunds are genetically prone to IVDD or "slipped" disc due to their long backs and type of cartilage between the vertebra. Trying to limit jumping, walking on hind legs and making sure Oscar is trim and slim can all help reduce his risk of disc disease. Here are some articles that give more in depth information. https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4953012 http://therehabvet.com/2017/09/what-is-ivdd/

Hello. I wish I could tell you what to do, but you already know what is bad for Oscar. All you can do is intervene as much as you can to hopefully prevent a disc rupture. Keeping Oscar slim & prevent any obesity, & encouraging as much sane exercise as possible ( long leash walks, swimming ) will help to strengthen his back muscles. Always lift Oscar with 2 hands & never let him just dangle from one arm. There is an unwritten rule that if a dachshund makes it past 7 years of age without suffering a back injury, they seem to be out of the woods. There is some truth to this. So, the fact that you are aware of possible problems puts you way ahead of the curve. With a little bit of luck, Oscar will do well. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
