My Maltipoo has an irritated bump. Could it be a skin tag or cancer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltipoo | Male | neutered | 8 years and 6 months old | 8 lbs

I just found an irritated bump on my 8 year old Maltipoo. I noticed it about a month ago but I thought it was a skin tag as he has developed a few of those now that he is older. It looks worrisome and he is clearly irritated when I try to get a closer look, should I bring him to the hospital? Note-the second photo attached is after putting a dab of Neosporin on the area

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Ringo! I see what you mean about the bump. It could be a growth of some sorts, either benign or malignant. Any suspicious bumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the bump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. I would give his vet a call in the morning to make him an appointment. Best of luck.
