Is a spiky elm caterpillar poisonous to my dog? What are the signs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 10 months old | 7 lbs

My dog might have come in contact with a spiky elm caterpillar . Barely if anything. We were walking at the park and stop to say hello to someone and then I saw a little caterpillar next to her and Cleo smelling it. What are the signs to look for is it really poisonous? Any experience with this caterpillar’s?

The "spikes" of the caterpillar may cause irritation in and around the mouth. Monitor for redness, swelling, pawing, licking or drooling. You may see some stomach upset (vomiting or diarrhea) if one is ingested. One is likely not enough to cause serious toxicity if eaten.
