Purebred Mastiff vs. rescue mix: Puppy temperament with kids and cats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi Looking for advice on breeds, I have a choice of two puppies. One of my choices is a purebred English Mastiff. My other choice is a rescue puppy that is an English Mastiff mixed with Staffordshire Terrier/labrador. I like idea of a rescue puppy but I'm a little nervous because I don't know the temperament of the parents and I'm not allowed to meet the pup before they bring it to my home. 3 kids 2 cats at home... any insight or advice? I had an English Mastiff before who died of cancer. Thx

Hi there. If you have children and other pets at home, I would strongly recommend getting a puppy with known parents, who have the kind of temperament you're looking for. A rescue pup with unknown parentage might turn out to be just fine, but it's much more of a gamble.
