Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon Polydactyl | Male | neutered | 9 months and 26 days old | 10.5 lbs

Hi. i have a kitten who is about to turn 1 year old in a two months , He is a maine coon mix and still growing. I was wondering at what time i should switch him to adult cat food. I do not want to switch him to early and stunt his development. What do you suggest?

A purebred Maine coon should eat kitten food until they are 15 months old so Goliath should probably eat kitten food till he is about 12 or 13 months old. Since he is a mix, he is not likely to get as big or grow as much as a purebred Maine coon. When he is a year old, have him examined by his veterinarian who may be able to get a good idea of how much more growth you should expect from him or if he appears to be done growing. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would think that Stormageddon (great name!) will be skeletally mature at 2 years, though they can potentially continue to grow up to 4 years. So I would change to adult food at 2 years of age. Have a great day!
