My dog ate grass and is gagging/coughing. Could something be stuck?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 3 years old | 80 lbs

Yesterday I took my dog who is a pit bull mix out to some property in the country and there’s a lot of tall grass that’s been growing lately and he ate a whole bunch of it and afterward, it kind of seemed like he would dry heave like he was gonna throw up but he never threw up anything and it’s been 12 hours now and he keeps doing this kind of coughing gagging like he’s got something stuck in his throat or nasal passage. I checked as best I could but saw bothing. Also gave him Benadryl.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. If he inhaled grass blades in his nose, this could contribute to the signs you are seeing. He may also have some grass or another foreign object lodged in his esophagus. I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at Chuck so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I wouldn't wait too long because if there is something stuck and it goes unaddressed, it could potentially become a serious problem. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
