My dog is peeing blood and whining. What's causing this issue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 5 months old | 18 lbs

My dog bleeds when passing urine. It is about a quarter size of blood that comes out followed with drips of blood. He also whines when peeing. We took him to the vet about 3 months ago for the same issue minus the whining when peeing and they said it was an infection so they prescribed him antibiotics in the form of pills.

Poor Buddy! I would recommend taking him back to the vet tomorrow for another exam. Possible causes of bleeding during urination could include a bladder or prostate infection, bladder stones, a bladder or prostatic tumor, or some type of injury to the bladder or penis. I'm not sure what kind of testing was done at his last visit, but a urinalysis, urine culture, x-rays, and possibly ultrasound of his bladder and prostate would likely be recommended at this point to help diagnose the problem.
