Why are annual dog vaccinations needed when titer tests are an option?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Why is it necessary to inject a dog every year, some people say it is not some say ( mainly vets) that it is, so why isn't a titer test not more ready available, at a more affordable price.

Some vaccines need to be given every year, while other brands can be given every three years. The reason why titer tests are not more available or affordable is because they don't prove immunity and cannot say that the animal is protected or not. Giving the vaccine is the only way to be sure your dog is protected.

Vaccines are safe as a general rule. Unless you have a dog who has shown a sensitivity to vaccinations, it is completely fine to give him the vaccines on their regularly scheduled basis. If however Marty has a sensitivity to vaccinations, or if you do not want to introduce anything into his body that may not be completely needed, you can have the titers done. Titers are a little bit more work, but they will tell you if he has appropriate antibody levels or if a vaccine is needed to boost antibody levels. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
