When to start heartworm & flea/tick meds for dogs after negative test?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 2 senior dogs passed their heartworm tests. When should I start their Heartgard & Frontline Plus? We live in SE Wisconsin and temperatures are still varying between 30-60 degrees.

Hello. You want to start heartworm prophylaxis with 30 days of a negative heartworm test. Ticks & fleas can definitely survive your temperature range, so go ahead & start using your Frontline to get a head start on the warm weather parasite explosion. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
