My senior cat has diarrhea and drinks more. When should I see a vet?

I have a 15-year old cat who has been having diarrhea for the last 2 days. It's not explosive, and not occurring more often than his usual bowel movements. He's also been drinking more water than usual but has no other visible symptoms. Can I give him something to help with the diarrhea? Or is taking him into the vet the best option? Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 16 years and 2 months old | 19.2 lbs
