My senior cat has diarrhea and drinks more. When should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 16 years and 2 months old | 19.2 lbs

I have a 15-year old cat who has been having diarrhea for the last 2 days. It's not explosive, and not occurring more often than his usual bowel movements. He's also been drinking more water than usual but has no other visible symptoms. Can I give him something to help with the diarrhea? Or is taking him into the vet the best option?

I would recommend a veterinarian. With his age I am concerned about dehydration and I would talk to your veterinarian about potential fluids. I would also recommend a bland diet for Beeper. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
