Dog snorting, noisy breathing, and blood: Is it related to illness?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | 10 years and 9 months old | 99 lbs

Yogi is having a few episodes of snorting a day. He is also breathing noisily from his nostrils. He has many underlying health issues including a possible tumour/abscess in his chest and lesions in his lungs and liver. Could this be related. The snorting happens when he wakes up and then a couple of times during the day randomly. I found some phlegm tinged with blood on the floor yesterday probably from his nose. Many thanks

Poor Yogi! It’s hard to know if this is related to the tumor or a problem by itself. Since you saw the blood in the phlegm, I recommend to have him examined by his veterinarian. Even if this is related to the tumor there are medications that can control inflammation and keep him more comfortable. One thing you can do at home that may help us start him on an omega-3 fatty acid supplement for dogs. This will act as a natural anti-inflammatory and improve the lining of the respiratory tract. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
