My dog ate peanut butter (no xylitol) and is lethargic. Is he okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 3 months old | 21 lbs

My 21 lb dog ate approximately 4oz of peanut butter (no xylitol) somewhere between 2 and 7 hours ago. He has drank a lot of water since and vomited a small amount once. I took him for a mile walk before I noticed he had gotten into it and he seemed fairly normal, but now seems lethargic. He has had 2 solid poops since I got home.

As long as Scooby doesn’t have any medical conditions like pancreatitis I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Peanut butter without xylitol is not toxic, and although the one episode of vomiting may be related or you may see diarrhea it should be self limiting. If Scooby continues to vomit however you should see your vet.
