Why is my dog having trouble walking after taking Trazodone?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mountain Cur | Female | spayed | 2 years and 7 months old | 50 lbs

Macie has anxiety, very goofy 24/7. Our vet prescribed her 100mg Trazodone Hydrocloride once every 12 hours for 24 hours prior to anticipated travel event. She had her first ever yesterday, 6pm. Few hours later we noticed she hadn’t settled one bit, she was the exact same. 1am today I got up and she attempted to follow me, it was like she forgot how to move her legs to walk. She was slouched and she kept sitting to rest after about 2-3 steps. She kept looking back, maybe her hip??

While it's possible that this was related to the trazodone causing sedation, this is a relatively low dose for a dog her size and I would think you would have seen signs sooner. It is possible that she had some hip pain. Other causes of uncoordinated movement would include a neurologic problem like a seizure, or certain toxins. If she seems to be her normal self again I think it would be safe to try another dose of trazodone during the day when you can monitor closely (check with your vet first). If she is still not walking normally or seems painful I'd recommend having her examined by your vet.
