My senior dog has an enlarged kidney. Is it from Cephalexin damage?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 11 years and 8 months old | 69 lbs

on the 4th of March, my dog was given 2000 mg Cephalexin, for 21 days for a severe skin infection, he was 80 pounds. The last 8-9 days, he has lost 12 lbs and was given IV fluids and new antibiotics 2 days ago (today is the 27). I insisted on xrays because I thought he had something stuck in his throat. The xrays revealed he has a super enlarged kidney, 5 times the size of the opposite kidney. I was told he might have cancer. He only had a skin infection, now this? Is it cephalexin damage?

In rare cases, it can cause kidney damage, but it won't lead to the kidney becoming extremely enlarged. I'm sorry this is happening with Odin! In a dog his age, cancer is always a possibility. I hope this helps.
