My older dog is gaining weight. How can I adjust her homemade diet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Female | spayed | 12 years and 8 months old | 12 lbs

Gigi is gaining weight and I am worried about that as she's getting older. I have been feeding her a home cooked meal which I store in smaller quantities in the freezer: 1/2kg lean mince, 1/2kg frozen Winter vegetables cooked and mixed with 3/4 cup boiled Basmati Rice. She will not eat dry food. I also give her a measure of 3,6,9 oil Can I just feed Vegetables and Mince?

I would recommend adding a supplement such as BalenceIT. Their website can walk you though creating a balanced diet using the foods you're already used to cooking for her. It's always important to have a balanced diet, but as she gets older her body will be less able to handle the stress of any imbalances. As far as her weight, I'd recommend decreasing the overall amount rather than cutting out a macronutrient (in this case carbs)
