My bird was bitten by a rat and now seems very sick. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Female | unspayed | 0.0562 lbs

Last night in some freak accident that couldn't have been prevented, my rat bit my bird. She bleed like five good drops before the blood stopped. With a vet out of the way the only thing I could do was wait it out and hope. This morning when I uncovered her, I notice all her feathers are still super ruffled, her tail is bobbing up and down and when she bends over to drink she stops herself halway as if she can't balance enough to bend all the way down. I don't know what to do, please help.

Thanks for reaching out about D'vorah. She needs to be taken to a veterinarian, today. The concerns are she is septic, meaning bacteria from the bite wound has entered the blood stream. Systemic antibiotics are a requirement at this point, not something placed in the water as you can not control dose. See a veterinarian today. Good luck.
