My dog's paws, nose, and dewclaws are rough. Is it hyperkeratosis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Pyrenees | Female | spayed | 5 years and 2 months old | 100 lbs

We’ve had our rescue for a few months now, and I suspect that she has some kind of hyperkeratosis based on what some of her paws and her nose look like. One of her back dewclaws has something going on with it, I’m wondering if it could just be keratin but I haven’t heard of or seen this anywhere else. I’m worried if the dew claw can grow properly with this but it doesn’t seem to be bothering her at all. Any thoughts would be helpful.

I can definitely see the area you are concerned about. It is probably a combination of poor nutrition and the environment that Luna was in before you adopted her. If the area is not inflamed, tender, or sore, I would not worry about it at all. If she does seem uncomfortable then you should take her to your vet to be checked out just in case. I hope this helps.
