Dog's amputated toe is red and swollen after licking. Vet ER?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 68 lbs

My GSD mix had his toe amputated about a month ago. The area has been healing. Yesterday he was caught licking at it. today it’s inflammed and warm and red. I am not sure if a vet ER is absolutely necessary or if it’s something that can wait until morning. I currently have $1 and change in my bank so the ER is a last solution. Hoping it can wait until morning. But not sure. Thanks for any help you can give.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry to hear Lucky has been having such issues with his toe. I do think he needs to have the area evaluated by a veterinarian; if he is acting normally, eating, and does not appear to be feeling badly, I would alternate icing and warm compressing the area and keep him from licking it by putting a cone collar on it until he can be seen. The most important thing to do is to keep him from continuing to lick and irritate the area. Good luck!
