My 16-month-old dog is limping after playing. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 51 lbs

my dog is 16 months old and she just started limping on her back right leg tonight after running a bunch with my son earlier. She seems to be fine most of the time but she jumped off the couch about 30 mins ago and yelped again but then after that she jumped on the bed and laid down fine. Not sure whats wrong and we dont have a normal vet yet cause she has never had problems. All her shots got done at a shelter clinic here in Eugene OR where we live. Not sure what to do. Thanks

I'm sorry to hear about Penny. If she had a lot more activity than usual today, it could be possible that she is just a bit sore and pulled a muscle which is causing some discomfort. Keeping her quiet, on bed-rest with leashed-only potty breaks and preventing her from jumping up on things may help resolve any minor soreness or issues. If the limping doesn't resolve, or seems to worsen, then it would be best to find a vet that can take a look and rule out issues such as sprains, breaks, torn ligaments, etc which can also cause similar signs.
