Why is my senior Yorkie's cough worsening and has skin bumps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 5 lbs

Hello, my little Yorkshire Terrier who is not so little as she is believed to be 8-10 years old, has been making hacking/coughing noises for the past couple of months. At first, I thought it may be her allergy so I changed her diet. But for some reason, her cough has been gradually and consistently been getting worse. She eats normal, poops fine and still plays and goes on walks twice a day. Everything is fine but she has the crazy coughs. Also, she has some questionable bumps on her skin. Help!

Given Bella's age, my first thought on this cough is that it may be due to heart disease. That can be common in older dogs, and it would get worse over time. I would take her into the vet in the morning for a physical exam, and possibly blood work, a urinalysis, and chest x-rays. If she does have heart disease, the vet can prescribe medications for her symptoms. Unfortunately it's not curable, but it can be managed with medication. I hope this helps!
