My dog ate an onion ring. Is emergency vet needed for onion poisoning?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 75 lbs

My dog is a 12 year old lab/retriever and weighs roughly 70/75 pounds. About 30 minutes ago she sat up, had increased breathing, and seemed like she couldn't essentially catch her breath. I checked online for symptoms and am a little concerned about onion poisoning. She accidentally got a hold of 1 medium sized onion ring yesterday. She's now calm, breathing normal, and responsive. Not sure if I should go to a emergency vet or call my vet in the morning?

If Dallas is calm now, keep an eye on her. Should she have another one of these episodes, yes take her into an ER vet right away. Otherwise, call her vet in the morning to make her an appointment for a health check.
