My cat can't walk, has a fever, and is twitching. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 6 lbs

She hasn't really been able to walk since Saturday. Took her to get today, all he did was check her temp nd out on antibiotics. Didn't check her hind legs nothing. Asked if this infection he thinks she has cuz temp was 104.1 is linked to her not walking, he just says "Could be." Not reassuring to me. She lays here limp, now she's twitching. She had both doses of the antibiotic today. I googled it,her symptoms was pointing to kidney failure. Could this infection be why can't walk? Or more severe?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I’m so sorry to hear about Nova. I agree that a high temp like that could be a bacterial infection but it can also be a protozoal infection, pain from a clot or back injury, or even cancer. It is unlikely to be kidney disease in my opinion but bloodwork is needed to be certain. I’d take her to an emergency clinic right away for a second opinion. Next steps would be bloodwork including an FIV/FeLV screen and xrays to make sure she didn’t break a bone or have some other obvious problem. Best wishes to you and Nova.
