Puppy losing baby teeth: Can they chew Kongs? Should I worry about swallowed teeth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 22 days old | 3 lbs

My puppy’s baby teeth are starting to fall out. Is it OK to allow chew toys like a Kong at this time. I assume there is a chance he will swallow a tooth, should I be concerned about this?

You are right that most puppies will swallow their puppy teeth when they become loose. As this process is occurring the gums may be more sensitive and you could see a little blood discharge on toys if they are harder. If he likes the kong it is fine for him to chew on it. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
