Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Female | unspayed | 8 lbs

My Chihuahua is 61 days pregnant today her temp is 98.8. She doesn't show any other signs of labor. Could this be it?

Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. As labor is approaching, a pregnant dog's temperature generally drops by a degree or more. Once this happens, whelping should start within the next 24 hours. Sounds like it's time to get ready for Sage's puppies! Good luck! :-)

Once a dog's temperature drops below 100F, they should give birth to puppies within 24 hours. If 24 hours has passed since Izzy's temperature drop, then I would take her into a vet right away for an exam as she may need help giving birth to her puppies. Best of luck.

Yes, Lily should go into labor and deliver her puppies within 24 hours after this temperature drop. Please keep in mind that being toy breeds, Chihuahuas unfortunately frequently have trouble with giving birth, and often need c sections to deliver their puppies safely. I would keep an eye on her for the next 24 hours, and should this time pass with no sign of labor and no puppies, please take Lily into a vet immediately. I hope this helps and it all goes well :-)

When a dog's temperature drops below 100F, they should give birth to puppies within 24 hours. Keep an eye on her, and if 24 hours pass with no sign of puppies, bring her into the vet for a health check. Hopefully she should be able to push out her puppies safely. Best of luck.

Congrats! Yes expect puppies within the next 24 hrs. You should see her start to nest, so provide adequate blankets/towels for her. Then you will see her panting, becoming restless and having contractions. After the contractions start puppies should be delivered within 30 mins on average. If she seems to be having complications and not producing puppies within that time frame, or if you see green or black discharge then she needs to go to an ER vet immediately. Hopefully all goes well and she has an uneventful labor. Best of luck!
