My dog has a growing, fluid-filled eyelid bump. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 9 years and 7 months old | 16 lbs

My dog has a bump on her bottom eyelid that seems to be fluid filled. It has grown over this past year. It seems to have a small white bump on the inside of the eyelid right behind the bump that’s on the outside. Her eye is not red and it doesn’t seem to bother her. She never rubs it or anything. I just noticed that it is getting bigger since I first noticed it a year ago

Hello, thank you for your question about Chloe. Based on the photos that you've attached and the symptoms that you are describing it sounds like Chloe may have a mass/tumor on her eyelid. These are generally benign and do not lead to systemic problems. Other possible causes include a cyst or local infection. Since this lesion is growing in size I would recommend having Chloe seen by your veterinarian. If it continues to grow it may lead to problems on the surface of her eye. Your veterinarian can examine Chloe and determine the need for diagnostics such as ocular examination and potential removal of this lesion. Hope this helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. I think it is ok if you wait until your appointment. For now, try to keep it as clean and dry as possible. Good luck and have a good night!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think it is fine to wait until Friday. It is possible that it is now gone or mostly gone because of it being a cyst. You can try to keep it dry until your visit with your veterinarian. Otherwise, there is nothing you should be doing about it until then. Hopefully it is something benign like a cyst which seems likely. Good luck and have a good night!
