Is Vaseline safe and effective for my dog's dry or cracked paws?

Someone told me their vet said it is okay to use vaseline on their dogs feet. That it heals them plus it is non toxic. Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 7 years and 11 months old | 95 lbs
