Why is my newborn puppy not eating and pooping green liquid?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog had puppies a week ago. As of this morning 1 pup refuses to eat. I also saw the pup poop and it was liquid and green. She has lost 4 grams of weight. She won't even eat when I try to feed her myself. When she was born, the bitch bit the umbilical cord too closely and the pup bled a little. The vet near me told me to watch her til the evening, but I'm worried sick. Thanks in advance

This sounds serious and I would recommend trying to see another veterinarian if possible. Once neonatal puppies start to decline for whatever reason things can progress rapidly, and often there is not much to do other than offer aggressive supportive care. I would be a little surprised if the umbilical cord incident was related, unless she has an infection that has led to sepsis. This puppy might need to be tube fed, and her blood sugar could be low.
