What to do about my new mom cat's swollen teats and kitten scratches?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 8 lbs

My cat had her first litter of five kittens. One kitten passed away . The others are 9 days old today. My cat seems to be doing fine except for a couple of scratches from the kittens feeding and two slightly swollen teats. She is eating well and no other symptoms are present. What can I do to help?

Hi there and thanks for posting! Sounds like things are going fairly well for Celestine. Glad she is eating and drinking okay. Scratches can happen sometimes when kittens nurse on their mothers. There's not a lot you can do about that I'm afraid. The swollen teats however may be a problem. Red swollen teats can be an indicator of mastitis which is an infection of the mammary tissue. Typically this requires a veterinary visit and antibiotics to help cure. My advice would be to take her in to see her veterinarian if her mammary glands become increasingly red or swollen. I hope this helps and thanks again for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
