Why is my puppy still sick with kennel cough after antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 months and 18 days old | 8 lbs

Hello! I adopted a puppy last week. The very next day the puppy was sneezing a lot and had a lot of mucus. The next day I took him to the vet. The vet said he has kennel cough and she prescribed Clavamox for 10 days. Tomorrow will be day 8 and he is doing better but now he is coughing (he wasn't before) and still sneezing and still with a lot of mucus. Is normal that the antibiotics are almost done and he still with the symptoms? How long will take for my puppy to feel better?

I would recommend bringing Milo back to the veterinarian if he is coughing. A virus can last 2 weeks but my concern is with how young he is and small he is. If he developed pneumonia it is important to catch early. Your veterinarian can listen to Milo and see if a change in medication is necessary.
