Why is my guinea pig lethargic and not eating on antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 1 yr old guinea pig was prescribed antibiotics. He’s been on them for 2 days. He has become lethargic and isn’t eating. Stool is solid but soft. He doesn’t seem in pain. Is t squeaking or sqweeling in discomfort. Is this a normal side effect or should I d/c medication.

Hi, no it is not a normal side effect. I would discontinue the medication and ring your vet to let them know. In the meantime you can syringe feed your Guinea pig some recovery food , oxbow or supreme science in the UK. I have found this in the U.S.A. : https://www.amazon.com/Recovery-Guinea-Sherwood-Pet-Health/dp/B0102YYGAI
