Should I give my dog Deramaxx if he just finished steroid pills?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Basset Hound | Male | neutered | 7 years and 2 months old | 159 lbs

My dog has been on steroids for about a week and a half. He has 1 pill left for tomorrow. He is out of pain pills and the vet said I can give him the deramaxx for pain. I just read on the internet that you shouldn't mix those medications. I was just wanting a second opinion if I should give him the deramaxx. He goes to back to the vet tomorrow.

You are correct that drugs like Deramaxx should not be given currently with steroids because of the risk of GI ulceration. There should also be a wash out period after steroid use before starting NSAIDs (like Deramaxx) appropriate in length for the time on the drug. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
