My budgie fell in water and is only passing water. Is he okay?

Being weak and lethargic, are only general signs of illness and are not specific for any particular problem. It is often difficult to differentiate between loose stool and polyuria (increased urine), as they often pass both at the same time. This must be examined as the birds passes a bowel movement to identify well formed feces. A loose stool can be the result of an intestinal infection, liver disease, ingested foreign body (particle, toxin, other) and more. Increased urination can be due to increased water intake (behavioral, kidney or liver disease, diabetes (rare), environmental stresses (heat, breeding season, change in diet). Providing supplemental heat in the 80-85 F range, 24/7 can sometimes support the immune system. If the weakness continues, a veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Good luck.

If you're only noticing the watery stools on occasion, one of my first thoughts would be diet-related. Some veggies and fruits can cause watery stools, and if you notice this happens after giving them a new treat or something to snack on, it could be related. Removing all extras for a few days and seeing if the stool improves can help determine this. If it isn't food related, additional issues such as internal parasites, stress, diet changes, GI upset, infections, etc can also be possible causes. Keeping them in a low stress area, and scheduling a veterinary visit if the loose stools continue or other signs of illness such as listless behavior, weight changes, not eating or drinking, etc appear is best.

Clear water without feces and urate could be a sign of diarrhea but it's more likely to be a sign that they are not eating. if it's just occasional it's not a big issue, but if it is most of the time then it's definitely abnormal and needs to be checked by an avian vet specialist ASAP.

Thanks for reaching out about Kiwi. The white feces is probably urates, a kidney product, and not feces. The increased urine is also a possible result of some kidney concerns. Tail bobbing is sometimes a clinical sign of difficulty breathing, possible coelomic fluid (ascites) or a respiratory disease. It would probably be a good idea to see an avian veterinarian. If you've fed Miki any treats recently or changed his diet, it's possible the watery stool could be from that. Some fruits and veggies can cause an increase in watery stools, and removing them for a few days should allow the stool to return to normal. Other issues such as parasites, illness, etc, may have prolonged watery droppings, or you may see other symptoms such as decreased eating and drinking, not being as active, etc. If removing any treats or letting Miki adjust to a new diet doesn't clear up the stool issue in a few days, or you see worsening symptoms, scheduling a vet check to rule out more serious issues is best.

Normal droppings do have a liquid component, however if they are very watery it may be a good idea to remove any extras such as treats, veggies, fruits, etc from the diet for a few days to see if this clears it up- excessive treats can sometimes cause watery stool. If that doesn't resolve the issue, looking to causes such as an internal parasite which can cause diarrhea may be best. Bringing in a stool sample to your local vet can help determine if this may be the case.

All bird droppings are made up of three parts: Feces, the solid, central part which can vary in color depending on the food the bird eats. Urates, the next layer of the ring, which can be cloudy-clear or with shades of white, yellows and greens, again depending on the foods eaten. Urine is the clear liquid, usually outer layer of the ring. Depending on the amount of fruits and fluids the bird eats/drinks, this can be a significant part of the dropping. Diarrhea is often actually Polyuria. True diarrhea is when the feces part of the droppings are not well formed and liquidy. Diarrhea is usually caused by a disease. Polyuria is when there’s more than usual amounts of the urine and urates (the feces are still well formed). Polyuria may be caused by viral infections, allergies to foods or even a tumor somewhere. There are just so many possible causes that a vet visit is essential in order to catch things early.

If the weather is warming up where you are, that may increase water consumption without any other signs of illness, however, if he's kept in a cool area or there hasn't been a major change, it's possible an underlying issue such as illness could be causing it. Any extras on top of more water such as fruits and vegetables given as treats can also cause watery stool, so removing them for a few days to see if the stool firms up may help. If he continues with the drinking or watery stool, or shows any additional symptoms of illness, having a vet take a look and test for common issues such as parasites may help narrow down a cause.

Thanks for reaching out about your budgies and including pictures. Several things can change to color and consistency of the droppings: including dietary changes, hormones, stress, and some diseases. With greenish stool, liver changes are a common finding. This also can represent dietary concerns or disease. Have your birds ever been tested for chlamydophila (psittacosis)? If the stool changes is persistent, seek an appointment with an avian veterinarian. Birds are very good at hiding when their sick. Try eliminating fruits for a few days if you offer, as the high sugar content can increase water consumption, thereby urination. Good luck.

A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can give comfort.
