My African Grey won't use his new cage ladder. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | African Grey | Male

I have inherited an african grey from a friend who is ill. She's had him 15 years. I bought a new ladder for his cage and he refuses to go near it. Should I take it out or will he accept it eventually? I want this transition to be as stress free as possible.

If it is causing him stress, remove the ladder. Leave it in plain view outside of the cage for a week or two and then try to reintroduce it. He may not accept it though, in which case just leave it out of the cage. Try using puzzle feeders and interactive toys. Greys require more mental stimulation and play.
