Adopted dog won't let guests pet her. Is she still adjusting to home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 45 lbs

Adopted a 2 yr old border collie/ terrier mix 3 days ago. When I met her, she was abundantly social and friendly and bonded with me immediately. Same when she met my roommate. However, when my parents came to visit, she would not let them pet her even after throwing the ball (which she LOVES) for her for 20 minutes and giving her treats/ peanut butter. Is this just because she is adjusting to a new home? Or is this the beginning of other behavior I need to address?

Penny has been through a lot lately with moving to a new home with a new owner. When you met her, you likely met her where she was living, so she felt comfortable there and was friendly. She met your parents in a new home that she has not adjusted to yet, so she likely was shy and a little scared. Give her some time, it's ok that she didn't let them pet her. I imagine she will warm up as she becomes more comfortable in your home. Best of luck.
