Why is my senior dog coughing and hacking very often, what's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | spayed | 13 years and 5 months old | 70 lbs

My dog is 13 years old and is a Golden Retriever. She has been having episodes of coughing/hacking frequently. There is nothing lodged in her throat. But like I said, it is very often, about every 5-10 minutes. It is concerning and just wanted to get some information on it.

There could be a medical reason behind Sophie coughing such as heart disease. Unfortunately that can be common in older dogs, and the coughing would be due to fluid build up in the lungs because the heart doesn't pump properly anymore. It could also be a respiratory infection. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain what is going on with her, so I recommend having her seen by a vet in the morning. The vet can diagnose what is causing her coughing, and the best way to treat her. I hope this helps!
